Heat pumps can provide a more stable and faster heating solution, unlike traditional PTC (positive temperature coefficient) water heating systems, which are slow to heat up and inefficient. Heat pumps are becoming a must-have feature in modern vehicles because they can provide heat even in extreme winter conditions (the minimum operating temperature is -30°C while providing a comfortable 25°C heat to the cabin).   Hybrid and electric drivetrains have several features that make testing them very different from the standard testing conducted on internal combustion (IC) only systems. Hybrid and electric systems use regenerative braking (where braking actually generates power that is returned to and stored in the vehicle’s battery for later use). This typically requires addition of fairly complex AC inverter technology, and often more complex transmissions. In addition, these vehicles often have several module control units (MCU’s), essentially small onboard computers, which control the functions of such major subsystems as the engine, transmission, and charging system, among others. To properly test these components, the test system needs to be able to communicate with one or more of these units via a high speed in-vehicle networks. While there have been some high-profile cases of autonomous vehicles being involved in tragic fatal accidents, data suggests that self-driving cars will ultimately make our roads safer. Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that driver error is by far the biggest cause of road traffic accidents, due to factors like miscalculations, errors of judgement, speeding, drink-driving, and phone use. In fact, an alarming  94 percent of serious crashes  are down to human error. Fully autonomous vehicles would take human error out of the equation, thereby making our roads safer not just for drivers, but also passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians.   Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles is an abbreviation that stands for them. It’s a car featuring an electric drivetrain and an internal combustion (IC) engine. Unlike typical hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have a larger battery pack that enables them to run at slower speeds exclusively on electricity. By attaching the battery to an external power source, it can be charged. Regenerative braking or the IC engine both provide additional battery charging. When the car is cruising at a high speed, the internal combustion engine may take over and drive the vehicle. In certain cases, the engine’s efficiency can be raised by the electric motor as well. Similar to a conventional hybrid car, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has a bigger battery pack and can run entirely on electricity.
