The Automotive Industry - Potential and Strategy of Reusing Components for Improved Sustainability

The automobile, produced in increasingly large quantities, significantly impacts global aspects of life. Consisting of thousands of high-tech parts, including high-quality aluminum and steel alloys, its production is resource intensive. Systematic recycling does not exist. The metallic components of a few vehicles are melted down and fed into the energy-intensive production process. This paper aims to demonstrate the potential of directly reusing these components and develop efficient manufacturing concepts for their implementation. By completing the material flow loop through remanufacturing and direct reuse, the project seeks to enhance resource efficiency in the automotive industry. Key sub-processes include identification, automated disassembly, and condition determination of components. A universal laser-based dismantling technology for almost all connections is presented, which makes it possible to separate components without damage.
