History of the Automobile

Image
Cugnot's 1770 invention sparked a global surge in steam carriages. By 1790, Amiens, France, witnessed the emergence of post-Cugnot steam carriages, which revolutionized transportation. Steam buses graced Parisian streets by 1800, showcasing steam's vast mobility potential. English innovators like Trevithick and Gurney furthered steam carriage evolution. Gurney's lightweight carriage, reaching 17 mph, exemplified steam propulsion efficiency. Despite challenges and the 1865 Red Flag Act, steam's legacy endured into the 20th century. As seen in the Stanley brothers' steam cars and the Locomobile's US success, steam had a lasting impact on the American imagination. Gottlieb Daimler, a brilliant mind in engineering, played a pivotal role in the development of the internal-combustion engine. In 1885, Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach introduced the first high-speed engine, setting the stage for the mass conversion of carriages into engine-driven vehicles. Global Automobil...

The Great Indian Automobile Industry

Image
During July 2018 a change was asked of the automobile sector. A regulatory change in axle load norms. This was just a small change but even a small drop can cause a huge way (the butterfly effect) and it happened in this case. The idea was to use it to restrict the vehicle population in India and reduce emissions. Maybe it was the reason maybe it wasn’t but from this point, the downfall of the industry had started and nobody knew what’s gonna happen in the coming year. A business cycle is something that is common to every sector. It begins with an  Expansion  (more products developed),  Peak  (the highest glass ceiling a sector can reach),  Recession  (sector stops expanding and falls to negative for at least 2 quarters) sometimes the cycle resets here or goes to  Depression  (sustained recession causing major downfall around the entire sector)  Trough  (the sector starts picking itself up again) and finally  Recovery  (...

Advanced Automotive Diagnostics Systems

Image
New vehicles, complete with 100 or more ECUs, have become highly complex networks and this increases the pressure to develop more efficient tools and systems to effectively diagnose the ECUs. The current trends in legislation and functionality offer opportunity but also come with risk as complexity increases. However, services such as ADAS and eCall are already taking advantage of connectivity and the push towards autonomous driving will see further development of car-to-X communication. The huge increase in the amount of data gathered from the vehicle and the ability to process it offers a variety of benefits in terms of maintenance. One of these possibilities is vehicle diagnostics over the entire lifecycle, from engineering to manufacturing to after-sales. Technical experts could, for example, be based in a regional technical centre from which they could access data from an individual vehicle’s ECUs in order to diagnose faults. This information could be relayed to the service ...

automotive lubricants

Image
A lubricant is generally a fluidic material with the primary function of reducing friction between surfaces in contact. Lubricant minimises energy loss generated from friction; at the same time it can also be very useful to clean, cool, and prevent metal parts from corrosion & rust and many such challenges a machine faces during its operation. Base oils make-up most of the volume of a lubricant and can either be made of a mineral oil or of a synthetic oil. Mineral base oil can be obtained from a distilling process while refining crude oil, and Synthetic base oils are made by further refining of mineral base oil through laboratory treatments, and few synthetic base oils are manufactured. Base oil can be divided into four groups, usually depending on the purity level of that oil. The Group-I and Group-II are Mineral Base Oils, Group-III is known as Synthetic Base Oil, other base oils falls under Group-IV category. Engine oils are used for application inside engine. A good engin...

Automobile Industry: Current Trends and Future

Image
Automobile industry is one of the growing sectors in Bangladesh. Compared to the last decade, the growth of the automobile industry has gradually increased due to the socio-economic development and purchasing power of the middle and upper middle class of the country. According to  BRTA data , the number of passenger car vehicles increased at a 5.43% CAGR rate from 2011-2020. However, compared to other Asian countries, the passenger car penetration is still very low in Bangladesh. There are only 2.5 car owners per 1000 population. In India, 30 people among 1000 individuals owned a car at the end of 2018. In Myanmar, about 12 people out of 1000 own a car. Higher tax rate on automobiles, inadequate and narrow national highways, high traffic density, high price of fuels, higher interest rate on private vehicle financing are responsible for the lower number of car owners in Bangladesh. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, sales of automobiles declined to its lowest in 7 years. In this art...
